Understanding trigger points with Rimon
Within the framework of my massage therapy sessions, I frequently integrate a specialized technique known as Neuromuscular Technique (NMT).
The constitution of muscles revolves around their fibers, which contribute to their bulk. The task of upholding and regulating muscle tension falls upon the nervous system. Essentially, a muscle has a singular purpose: to contract and relax. However, after a comprehensive stretching session, certain fibers might remain contracted. When these muscle fibers or their encompassing connective tissues fail to fully return to their relaxed state, they can culminate in the formation of a painful 'knot,' often termed a Trigger Point in massage education circles.
What exactly are Trigger Points?
These minuscule points are located within muscle fibers. They predominantly manifest in muscles responsible for posture and can emerge in regions subjected to repetitive muscle use. The existence and precise origin of Trigger Points are subjects of debate within the bodywork community. Nevertheless, we can all empathize with the sensation of encountering a painful knot. Notably, the area around the shoulder blades is a fertile ground for persistent trigger points. This region often emanates a 'nervy' sensation that might radiate down the arm or upward into the neck.
What gives rise to Trigger Points?
Daily monotonous activities, such as extended periods of slouching at an ergonomically subpar desk, can trigger their formation. Additionally, individuals who consistently engage in intense training without adequate recovery or self-care are prone to these points. When daily stress is introduced into the equation, the conditions are ripe for their development.
How do you treat trigger points?
A fundamental aspect of my treatment involves pinpointing and addressing these trigger points to alleviate pain and restore full range of motion. I achieve this by applying pressure to the points, either inducing discomfort or slight soreness. It's important to ensure the pressure remains within your comfort zone. Initially, my clients might find the sensation surprising, but with guidance to breathe and facilitate release, they quickly realize that the discomfort subsides. The nervous system perceives this shift as non-threatening, allowing the return to a pain-free state.
Trigger point therapy holds significant importance within my treatment approach. It can yield profound relief for those grappling with persistent or recurring pain. By creating a window of opportunity, the body gains increased freedom and efficiency of movement. However, it's crucial to note that this treatment isn't a magical quick fix. Subsequent steps involve incorporating regular physical activity and making lifestyle adjustments. This is why I consistently offer post-treatment advice aimed at minimizing the likelihood and severity of future flare-ups.
